And each and every actor has a memory and every decision you make as a member of that society makes an impact on each and every other actor. You never know if a decision you make in today’s race is going to have an impact on tomorrow’s race, where you or your team might not be as strong as you were today. It’s obviously not just about winning every race. Road cycling is not an Athletics track&field event where you win by crossing the line first or throwing a thing further away, it’s much more complex than that, from a competitive and from a business perspective… In my opinion (and the opinion of many other’s who don’t make this debate emotional as TJ does), Tadej and the UAE team are not good strategists and they simply make a mistake by riding so aggressively and ‘tyrannical’. It’s not about being magnanimous, it’s about ‘making friends’ and thinking long term. It might seem obvious to mention Indurain’s style here as a counter example for people who’ve been into cycling for long, but I guess there are a lot of young people who don’t have this historical perspective. Again, it’s not about being right or wrong, but the debate is much more complex and nuanced than how it’s conveyed with this 1-minute clip.”

El ‘error’ de TJ en su argumento es hacerlo emocional sobre otros ciclistas (no sorprendentemente, Jorgenson siendo estadounidense) y hablar de ‘clase’ o falta de motivo, en lugar de buscar motivos utilitarios y racionales detrás de la decisión de luchar por la etapa o no luchar (sorprendentemente, TJ siendo estadounidense). La cuestión no es que Pogačar no tuviera una razón para luchar por la etapa, la cuestión es que podría tener UNA RAZÓN PARA NO HACERLO. Nunca sabes si una decisión que tomas en la carrera de hoy va a tener un impacto en la carrera de mañana, donde tú o tu equipo podrían no ser tan fuertes como lo fueron hoy. Obviamente no se trata solo de ganar todas las carreras. El ciclismo en ruta no es un evento de Atletismo donde ganas cruzando la línea primero o lanzando algo más lejos, es mucho más complejo que eso, desde una perspectiva competitiva y desde una perspectiva empresarial… En mi opinión (y la opinión de muchos otros que no hacen este debate emocional como TJ), Tadej y el equipo UAE no son buenos estrategas y simplemente cometen un error al correr de manera tan agresiva y ‘tiránica’. No se trata de ser magnánimos, se trata de ‘hacer amigos’ y pensar a largo plazo. Podría parecer obvio mencionar el estilo de Indurain aquí como un contraejemplo para las personas que han estado en el ciclismo durante mucho tiempo, pero supongo que hay muchos jóvenes que no tienen esta perspectiva histórica. Nuevamente, no se trata de tener razón o estar equivocado, pero el debate es mucho más complejo y matizado de lo que se transmite con este clip de 1 minuto.
